| I have started getting this error message in our logs: net named[9]: client 6.9.1.7#1591: update '1.9.6.IN-ADDR.ARPA/IN' denied 6.9.1.7 is a W2K pc on our LAN and it has a DNS record in our DNS server. It has been there for over 2 years and I never heard peep from it. The messages started coming on Tuesday and I do not know why nor do I know what the real problem is. The pc did get a mobo transplant along with a new NIC. The pc does have SMTP setup on it , but the SMTP no longer functions - the service just won't start up anymore since Wednesday night. As far as I can see, there are no other Internet type services running (ie: webHosting, ftpServer, etc.) Any ideas? Thanks. |

Changing the motherboard and NIC card would have changed the ethernet MAC address of the machine. If routers, switches, other PC's, or other hardware have the old MAC address in their ARP table they won't talk. Sometimes it can take an extremely long time for old entries to expire from routers ARP tables. My suggestion would be to shut that machine down, reboot everything else directly connected to it on the net, switches, routers, other PC's, then try bringing it back up. I've experienced similiar symptoms when I've changed out NIC cards here and usually the switch or router is what wants to hang on to the ARP entry forever. -- -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- Eskimo North Linux Friendly Internet Access, Shell Accounts, and Hosting. The pc did get a mobo transplant along with a new NIC. well if in addition to a new mobo it also got a fresh install of Windows, it sounds as if maybe the machine is trying to register its PTR record. i think it may attempt this by default. since the nameserver for 1.9.6.IN-ADDR.ARPA. is probably configured to drop this, and thus the first time you've seen the message. | Changing the motherboard and NIC card would have changed the ethernet | MAC address of the machine. | | If routers, switches, other PC's, or other hardware have the old MAC | address in their ARP table they won't talk. Nanook brings up a good point---and one that's bitten me several times. in my experience, though, i've rarely seen a default that's more than 15 minutes. i've definitey changed it and forgot i did once or twice... like Nanook, i like to power everything down and bring back up. in this case, though, i think the error message is coming from the nameserver for 1.9.6.IN-ADDR.ARPA. it seems this is not an arp issue. |

| Thanks for the advice. As it turned out though, as Jimmie suggested, the 'register in domain' box was clicked on in the w2k network properties clicked it off, and no more of that problem. |
